Chocolate Orange Slices
Dessert Quick recipe

Chocolate Orange

These Chocolate Orange Slices achieve an ideal harmony, featuring a creamy and delightful sweetness from white chocolates combined with a subtle, refreshing tartness from oranges.

Ever considered the pairing of orange and chocolate? It may sound unusual until you taste these chocolate orange chips! Experience a subtle bitterness from the orange peel, perfectly balanced by the sweetness of white chocolate and fruity undertones. The dehydration process transforms the orange into a crispy, irresistible snack that you won’t be able to resist.

With just a few simple steps, anyone can create these crunchy, beautiful, and incredibly delicious snacks!

Can You Eat Orange Peels?

Orange peels are entirely edible. They actually contain more fibers and vitamin C than the orange fresh; also rich in provitamin A, polyphenols, folate, vitamin B6, and calcium.

Despite its numerous benefits, you might discover that orange peel can be too bitter and challenging to chew. Hence, in this recipe, we’ll boil the peel in sugar water to eliminate the bitterness. Subsequently, we’ll bake them until they become thin and crispy. Last but not the least, the creamy sweetness of white chocolate serves as an ideal counterbalance to both the bitterness and the firm texture.

Tips for Making Chocolate Orange

1. Prepare the Oranges: Thoroughly wash the oranges, as the peel will be consumed. Aim to slice the oranges as thinly as possible to enhance crispiness; thicker slices may pose a slightly tougher texture for chewing.

2. Optionally Boil the Orange Slices: You have the choice to boil the orange slices in sugar water to get rid of any bitterness from the peel. This step is optional, as the white chocolate coating can effectively balance any potential bitterness.

3. Choose Your Drying Method: For optimal results, use an air fryer or a fruit dehydrator to achieve a crispy texture when drying the orange slices. You can also bake them like I did, although it requires a significantly longer time compared to an air fryer.

4. Melt White Chocolate: You can melt chocolate chips using Double Boiler Method, Microwave Method (Microwave in 20-30 seconds intervals on medium power, stirring between each interval until the chocolate is fully melted), Hot Water Bath Method (Set the bowl of chocolate chips over a bowl of hot water, stir until the chocolate melts).

5. Dip and Shake: Dip just one side of each orange slice into the melted chocolate. Gently tap the slice over the cup to remove any excess chocolate. Avoid coating both sides or applying too much chocolate, as this may result in an overly sweet taste for the chocolate orange.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 4 Large oranges (Try to use oranges with thinner peels)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 8 oz White chocolate chips (The sweetness of white or milk chocolates complements the tartness of oranges wonderfully. If you prefer a healthier option, feel free to use dark chocolates.)

Instructions

1. Wash and dry 4 oranges. Cut about ½ inch off the top and bottom of the oranges. Slice the rest part of the oranges into ⅛-inch-thick slices.

2. In a large pot, add 1 cup of sugar and 2 cups of water. Bring it to a boil, stir until the sugar is melted.

3. Add the orange slices into the pot, simmer them over medium low heat for about 20 minutes. Remove them from the pot, pat them dry with kitchen paper, and arrange them on a baking rack.

4. Air fry the orange slices at 212°F (100°C) for approximately 30 minutes, making sure to check and flip them every 10 minutes until they become completely dry. Or bake at 175°F for 5 hours. They will turn crispier as they cool.

5. Place white chocolate chips in a cup and nestle the cup in hot water. Stir the chocolate chips until they melt.

6. Submerge one side of an orange slice in the melted chocolate, and carefully shake the dipped orange chocolate chip over the cup to allow any excess chocolate to drip back into the cup.

7. Place the orange slices on a cooling rack with the chocolate side facing upward. Allow them to rest at room temperature (or in the fridge during summertime) for about 1 hour or until the chocolate solidifies.

8. Store them in an airtight container in the fridge. They can stay good for up to 2 weeks.
