Is there anything more refreshing than an iced latte with freeze distilled milk?
There is a reason why this espresso drink is hugely popular. The combination of bitter coffee with the delicate sweetness of freeze distilled milk is a delight.
Best of all, it’s easy to make at home with your leftover expiring milk!
What’s The Best Milk for Iced Latte?
Please give this freeze distilled milk a chance! You will be surprised 😉
Those of you who enjoy a latte know that whole milk makes a good latte. But what many don’t know the distillation step can gives whole milk an even creamier finish.
How so?🧐
When properly distilled and thawed, your milk will be even creamier and sweeter than before, helping it to pair beautifully with a shot of espresso.
While frozen the fat content separates from the rest of the milk creating a concentrated solution. When thawed the protein and minerals thaw first leaving most the water content behind, giving you the creamier, sweeter finish, you taste in your latte.
Can I freeze milk?
Yes! It’s a smart choice to freeze your leftover milk before it expires.
But keep it in mind that, milk (as a liquid) will expand when frozen. Therefore, you need to make sure that there is enough headspace in the bottle/carton (simply drink some of the milk before freeze it), otherwise the container might split.
The process of making freeze distilled milk or fractional freezing at home is pretty simple:
- Get some whole milk in a plastic bottle (make sure the milk is less than 80% full to prevent the container from splitting).
- Put it in the freezer overnight.
- Flip it upside down onto a second container, wrap any gap with food wrap, and allow it to melt in the fridge until 50% melted.
- Note: Frozen milk must be kept in the fridge to thaw for food safty.
Why Isn’t This the Method They Use in The Café?
Evidently, this process is quite simple to duplicate. However, as confirmed by Basita Magazine, its use has mostly been used by home cooks, and in barista competitions.
Sure, the process is easy, but it takes a long time to prepare, especially seeing the thawing can take hours in the fridge to be safe for food.
So, it is likely that we will never see freeze distilled milk being used in coffee shops around the world. But, for now, we can admire and appreciate it as a competition delicacy that can be replicated at home.
So, let’s dive into how to make it!
