Pomelo Flower can be made within 15 minutes and at $0 cost.
Pomelo, one of my favorite fruits, is invited to my blog again! Previously, I have introduced ways to utilize the rind and the zest, which are usually discarded after finishing the pulps.
I made grapefruit rind into Grapefruit skin candies and pomelo zest into Yuzu salt. Some of you asked – “What about the skins that hold the pulps?”. This time, I’m going to turn these membranes of a pomelo into a rose!
These membranes are as thin as butterfly wings, and the tiny transparency reminds me of flower petals. They are also born with the extra bonus of fruity fragrance.
My pomelo has pinky pulps and membranes, which makes my flower into a pink rose – This could be a lovely gift idea for Valentine’s Day! Isn’t it so lovely and pretty?
Surprise your lover with this handmade rose!
But be careful – it smells so good that your lover might think it’s edible… (Mr He bit on my rose after sniffing it, apparently he thinks everything I make is edible lol).
Pomelo v.s. Grapefruit
In my Yuzu salt TikTok video, I got mixed up by the two fruits and some of you corrected me there. Wikipedia clarified that they are both citrus and pomelo is actually the ancestor of grapefruit – so they are very related!
Pomelo also has more of a sweeter taste and less of a bitter taste comparing to grapefruit. And by the way, did you know pomelo is the largest citrus fruit in the family?
DIY pomelo flower step-by-step
EQUIPMENT
- A pair of scissors
- One roll of double sided tape
- A stick (I used a bamboo stick. You can also roll a paper to make a paper stick.)
INGREDIENTS
- 1 Pomelo/grapefruit (Only need its membranes)
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Peel a pomelo, collect its membranes.
2. Pick a long membrane strip (about 5 inch long, 1 inch wide), cut fringes about 2/3 into the membrane strip. Set aside.
3. Cut the rest of membranes into the shape of rose petal. We will need about 15 petals. The sizes could be vary. You can cut 5 small ones, 5 medium ones, and 5 large ones. Set aside.
4. Apply double sided tape on the edge of each petal and the strip.
5. Roll around and stick the long membrane strip to a stick.
6. Tape small petals to the base, then the medium ones, lastly the large ones. Overlap subsequent petals by covering 1/3 of the previous petal.
7. After you have taped all the petals to the stick, gently spread the petals open, so they look more vibrant.
